A Comprehensive List of Things Other Countries Should Start Making Fun of America About

If the saying is true, and what goes around comes around, it is only a matter of time until some holier-than-thou aliens arrive from Mars and attempt to convert us away from our existing culture, the same way we did to Native Americans, Africans, Asians, and uh... the rest of the world a couple centuries ago. Until then, "third world countries" should start a growing list of everything wrong with America. I'll get us started:

1. The fact that the tax is not built into the price tag. I mean, c'mon. They know we can't do 6% of anything in our heads.

2. The fact that we claim to be the biggest democracy in the world and have a voter participation rate of less than 60%.

3. The fact that we celebrate any election with a voter participation rate higher than 60%.

3. The fact that we pay our teachers, on average, less than Korea, Spain, Canada, Poland, Finland, and, well, you get the idea.

4. The fact that our national debt is almost 30 trillion dollars.

5. The fact that nobody cares about the fact that our national debt is 30 trillion dollars.

6. I'm sorry because I just don't understand-- what are we spending thirty trillion dollars on?!

7. The fact that those seeking higher education are buried in student loan debt for the next fifty years of their lives.

8. The fact that we have almost double the amount of COVID cases than the second-place country, despite hypothetically having resources.

9. The fact that most Americans probably think Africa is a country.

10. The fact that over half of all adult Americans have not read a book in the past year. Like, not one.

11. The fact that there have been 13 school shootings this year alone (yes, in the past three months) and not a single piece of legislation for gun control.
12. The fact that our environment is decaying so fast our billionaires are trying to settle on Mars, and yet we withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement in 2016.

13. Racism.

14. The Heartbeat Act.

15. The fact that the Heartbeat Act is probably going to be upheld by the Supreme Court soon.

God bless 'Merica, am I right?

To close, let me leave you with a tweet one of my best friends (shoutout to Ashna) sent me a while ago. I might be biased, but I think it's pretty brilliant.

  1. Hi Deepti, reading through the list, I was shocked to find out most of these things because I hadn't even heard of them. I find the fact that most of these topics aren't talked about to be ridiculous because nearly half of the population doesn't even care about what goes on in the country or even bothers to do anything about it.

  2. Hi Deepti! Your blog is such an interesting read; it's hard to look away from the problems that America is facing when you list all the problems all out. It's so surprising that America is lacking in so many categories. In fact, just a few days again, I watched a John Oliver video on how America is the only country in the world that doesn't have paid maternity leave. All in all, I enjoyed reading your blog!

  3. I know why our national debt is 30 trillion dollars. It's all the money we use to badly repair the roads. According to my violin teacher, the construction workers intentionally repair the roads so they break every year and must be repaired, otherwise the money would go to waste. I haven't done research myself to check if this is true, but it wouldn't surprise me. Sometimes the truth is more bizarre than any fiction.
