the lights are out and i'm here, does that make me a god?

"'No Way To Prevent This, Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens."    - The Onion

& if in this darkness people perish and decay and waste away
i trust that you'll say something about how
we are what we kill.

& if in this darkness i measure your life by the weight of its crimes
repent and regret and rue the day i met you
get caught up in the world of my own mind
pray you forget to cut the red wire
fear not -- by the time you see reason
you're already forgiven
isn't that the twisted headline?

& isn't it romantic that it takes this darkness
for someone to realize they care
remember we're there
which is to say --
we are what you kill
made martyrs on a Monday night
when the plan was to mix Mentos and Sprite

my father told me i drive like a pianist
something about the way i balance
my heel on the bridge of the brake
control over speed, caution over haste
he taught me neither, but takes credit for both
genetics gives you rights, i suppose...
i wonder what yours thinks when you wield your instrument
pride? guilt? sorrow? indifference.

& while I wait in this darkness, it becomes my friend
at least i will be bigger than you until the bitter end
standing on the shell-shocked ghost of a plan went wrong
digging my dull nails into my sweaty palm
if this is how they find me
if this is how they find me
if this is how they find me
i hope they find you first.

& if this is who i am now
promise me this time you'll learn.

- don't you wish that i could die older
